Down on La Brea in Los Angeles, Incubus is playing nightly shows for an audience capped at 75, and Red Magnet Media is here to provide the backup. Today is Day II of Incubus HQ Live, an unprecedented participatory event that connects Incubus fans with the band. It’s one part pop-up store, one part creative space – one that is not limited to just music. Visitors are scanning QR codes to earn special Incubus GetGlue stickers, Viddy is capturing fans’ “If Not Now, When?” moments to commemorate the upcoming album of the same name, and blank canvases are already filling up with fan art made by anyone who can hold a crayon.
By July 6th, the final day of Incubus HQ Live, fans will be hard-pressed to find space to write on those art panels. This is no one-night mic stand; this is a weeklong event.
Mashable has recognized the incredible interactive experience that Incubus has built with its daily Livestreams of HQ Live events and shows. In one of what will be many streamed fan chats with guitarist Michael Einziger, Mashable picked up on the very opportunity that Incubus is offering its fans:
“I can only imagine what this would have been like with me, if I had this opportunity with some of the bands that I grew up listening to,” [Einziger] adds. “I would have lost my mind.”
In hopes to extend the experience to Incubus fans across the globe, Red Magnet Media (proudly dubbed the “Incubus Angels” by manager Steve Rennie) has been coaching “Team Incubus” on utilizing social media and innovative technologies that will amplify both their music and their story:
“That’s the key for us — being able to let people know that we have an album coming out, but allow people to find out about it through the channels that we prefer,” says Einziger. “None of us are great at talking about our music, we’d rather just play it. [But] we want people to know that we have an album coming out…. If we don’t tell the story ourselves, maybe somebody else will tell it in the way that we don’t like.”
Mayka and I have been tweeting, Facebooking, Livestreaming, driving remote fans to the Web experience, and setting up real-time experiences on site – but perhaps most importantly, we’ve been training Incubus’ first Fan Ambassador – a woman who was picked straight out of Incubus’ most devoted community of fans, IncubusHQ.
When we first started working with Incubus in May, the immediate goals were to prep them for successful social promotions for Incubus HQ Live, the July 12th release of If Not Now, When?, and the following tour, but clearly we needed to find a way for them to ensure community engagement that they could easily and effectively maintain. For Incubus, crafting a sustainable solution for ongoing quality community management included identifying this fan ambassador and getting her up to speed on the best practices of fostering such a devoted group. She loves the job as much as we love working with this client, which is to say quite a lot! It’s been an absolutely amazing experience so far and we’re excited to get to experience incredible live music for five more nights.
